In honor of 2011 National Grilled Cheese month (I kid you not), I have decided to pay homage to this tasty little staple, engrained in every red-blooded American’s diet. And, as if a whole month of tribute isn’t enough, these crazy kids out in Los Angeles put on a Grilled Cheese Invitational cause, I mean, c’mon…who DOESN’T like grilled cheese? And I’ll do you one better…pairing it up with fruit! I know, mind-blowing, right? Like to hear it, here it go…
Sadly to say, my work pal and I have a George Forman grill at work that is used solely for the art of grilled cheese making in the office. I will just chalk it up to trying to keep the dream of those college years alive, when all you needed was some carbs and a hot plate to make an excellent meal. I have eaten many a grilled cheese in my day, but I have never thought to do what this fella has for the ensuing recipe, found in my ongoing hunt for all things that fall under the cheese and deliciousness category. He totally takes it to the next level. So, here you go! Mangia! Oh, and try not to get overwhelmed by the instructions…they are pretty tricky! (wink)
Summary: Cheesy, gooey, fruity taste explosion.
- 2 slices cinnamon swirl bread
- 1 tablespoon butter, room temperature
- 2 slices cheddar cheese
- 1/4 apple, cored and thinly sliced (Granny Smith)
- Assemble the sandwich and grill at just below medium heat until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 2-4 minutes per side.
I don’t know…get nutty and try some pears in there! Maybe use gouda instead…now you’re getting saucy!
